SANTA CRUZ SAFE DRINKING WATER - March 2, 1999

NO FLUORIDATION OF THE PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY

"When you can drug people against their wills, and when public safety is not involved, there is no limit to what you can do, or to whom."
  -- Dr F. B. Exner

Fluoride's not been tested on the most susceptible portion of the population. The U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services stated in its Toxicological Profile on Fluoride (TP91/7-1993):
"Existing data indicate that subsets of the populations may be unusually sensitive to the toxic effects of fluoride and its compounds. These populations include the elderly, people with deficiencies of calcium, magnesium and/or vitamin C, and people with cardiovascular and kidney problems, pregnant women, fetuses, children. Postmenopausal women and elderly men in fluoridated communities may also be at risk of fractures."

Fluoride is neither necessary for life nor for sound teeth
No-one has ever been shown to suffer from a `deficiency' of fluoride. There is also recent evidence suggesting that fluoride in mg per day doses may have zero nutritional value . So, it seems that the only `justification' for putting fluoride in drinking water is that the small fraction of children, who do not brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste or would not use fluoride mouthrinses, might miss out on a possibly small topical benefit from this non-essential substance. But they may also miss out on the chronic toxic effects of swallowing fluoride: dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, bone fractures and hypersensitivity reactions.

Fortunately there are some courageous Dentists who do share the truth. One is Dr. Kennedy, past President of International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

Dr. Charles Gordon Heyd, Past President of the American Medical Associations says:
"I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long-range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable."

An accident waiting to happen...

Dr. James Patrick, a former antibiotics research scientist at the National Institutes of Health, describes the predicament: "[There is] a very low margin of safety involved in fluoridating water. A concentration of about 1 ppm is recommended. ...in several countries, severe fluorosis has been documented from water supplies containing only 2 or 3 ppm. In the development of drugs... we generally insist on a therapeutic index (margin of safety) of the order of 100; a therapeutic index of 2 or 3 is totally unacceptable, yet that is what has been proposed for public water supplies."

In May 1992, 260 people were poisoned, and one man died, in Hooper Bay, Alaska, after drinking water contaminated with 150 ppm of fluoride. The accident was attributed to poor equipment and an unqualified operator. Was this a fluke? Not at all. Over the years, the CDC has recorded several incidents of excessive fluoride permeating the water supply and sickening or killing people. We don't usually hear about these occurrences in news reports, but interested citizens have learned the truth from data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

IT HAS BEEN TRIED AND HAS NOT WORKED!

In 1971, after 11 years of testing, Sweden's Nobel Medical Institute recommended against fluoridation, and the process was banned. The Netherlands outlawed the practice in 1976, after 23 years of tests. France decided against it after consulting with its Pasteur Institute and West Germany, now Germany, rejected the practice because the recommended dosage of 1 ppm was too close to the dose at which long-term damage to the human body is to be expected. All of western Europe, except one or two test towns in Spain, has abandoned fluoride as a public health plan. It is not put in the water anywhere. They all established test cities and found that the benefits did not occur and the toxicity was evident."

Public pressure has gotten fluoride out of the water in places like Newark and Jersey City in New Jersey, and in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Fluoridation has been voted down throughout California in places like Burbank, Carmel, Davis, Los Angeles, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, San Carlos, San Diego, Sacramento, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Redwood City; in Bellingham, Bremerton and Olympia Washington.

Several studies directly link fluoridated water to skeletal fluorosis, dental fluorosis, and cancer

Letters to the Editor

Who benefits in terms of power and money from the promotion of fluoridation?

What are the roles of dental and medical associations, the food and aluminium industries, and governments?

Fluoride is a waste product of the aluminum and fertilizer industries

The motivating force behind fluoride use is the need of certain businesses to dump their toxic waste products somewhere. They try to be inconspicuous in the disposal process and not make waves. As is normal, the solution to pollution is dilution. You poison everyone a little bit rather than poison a few people a lot. This way, people don't know what's going on.

Fluoridation is compulsory mass medication, a procedure that violates the principles of medical ethics. Dosages can not be controlled or even monitored when medicine is placed in the public water system.

Insist on one of our most precious resources: unadulterated drinking water.

It is the right of each person to control the drugs he or she takes. Using the public water system as a vehicle to mass medicate people takes away your right to choose.

Committee For a YES vote on Measure N -- (831) 475-8914

The public water supply should be safe for all to drink.

In order to protect the public health from increased risk of hip fracture, cancer, dental fluorosis and other harmful effects which have been linked to fluoride in the scientific literature, and whereas data from the U.S. Public Health Service and the State of California show no significant difference in decay rates of permanent teeth and dental costs in fluoridated and non fluoridated areas in California;

Section 116410 of the California Health and Safety Code is amended to read: No fluoride or fluorine-containing substance may be added to public water systems. All laws to the contrary are hereby repealed. *****************************************************************************
